I just finished reading this article on Bahamas Press. It is a letter from an American home owner in Abaco complaining about the numerous break-ins at his home and the lack of resolution despite police knowing who committed the crimes.
What ticked me off, besides the incredible display of incompetence by the police as usual, was the first comment response to the letter;
This is FNM trust and confidence agenda for you. If the PLP was in power and mother Pratt was the minister you would not have heard the end of the FNM screams about incompetence; well what of this incompetence?
I’ve seen this type of one up-manship everywhere lately and its been going on forever. The FNM did it when the PLP was in power and now it seems its the PLP’s turn. There can be no progress when everything boils down to PLP vs FNM.
You see it in parliament; The current opposition questions the government about a particular event or policy and the answer from the government is something along the lines of ‘ u questing me? well when u was in power u did this n that, therefore u don’t have the right to question me’
This has to stop!
Its not about PLP and FNM, its about a corruption, lack of professionalism and work ethic that permeates every level of our society. This is not a PLP or FNM problem, this is a Bahamian problem! Its at the core of our society and its the number one reason we are facing so many difficulties today.
We as a country have to insist on high standards for ourselves, our government and all its agencies. We have to insist on professionalism. We have to insist on accountability. This is what the Bahamian people deserve. That is what was promised!
when your party is in power you cannot use the previous administration’s actions or lack thereof as an excuse
But to get back to the reason i wrote this, Not every thing boils down to PLP or FNM if we could move past this obstacle we would have much more progress in this country. Here’s a list of the 3 major obstacles to progress in this country
- PLP vs FNM: This country is extremely polarized along party lines. so much so that its hard to get things done at times. This is definitely something holding us back. There are some issues that are just larger than party politics. Unfortunately these issues are not getting address and we’re all paying the price.
- Poor Work Ethic: This is another huge huge problem in The Bahamas. Business owners have been complaining for years about the poor work ethic of Bahamian workers.To add insult to injury these same workers often demand a high salary. This is why some businesses prefer foreign workers. Check out these pictures i posted of the Bahamas National Stadium under construction
- Corruption: This unfortunately runs through and through our society, from the lowest valleys to the highest peaks of power and society you can find the corrupt. When money and power is involved anywhere in the world there will be corrupt individuals. But we are so small and young as a nation that it devastates us. We need leaders of integrity and honesty!
If we can eliminate these three obstacles in our society i sincerely believe we can be a great country.
