Sometimes i feel bad for the younger generation. There is so much that they are being robbed of and they will never know or appreciate.
Halloween was anticipated for weeks by us kids in my home town. At school everybody would be talking about it. Some of the more troublesome would be talking about the stash of rotten chicken eggs they had waiting.
A week or two before you had to find a chicken nest and touch the eggs. Once touched the hen would abandon the nest and the eggs would just rot. By Halloween you’d have a nice batch…if you were into that sort of thing 🙂
But We knew there would be groups of older kids trying to hit us with rotten eggs or trying to take our candy, that was just a part of the entire night and was all in good fun.
On Halloween night we would all make our costumes and head out in groups. Costumes were not bought in the stores, they were made.
Perhaps your mother had a old dress, or your father a old pair of pants and boots, your grandmother a old gray wig and hat. Put these all together, throw some white powder on your face and you were good to go. The more outrageous the better!
We would all gather in groups. If your group was too small you could not give a good performance and you could get your candy taken by older kids. Too large and there may not be enough candy to share.
We would go from house to house performing and collecting our treats. To perform we would have soda cans with stones in them, maybe someone would have a cowbell, others would have two bottles to tap together and someone would be beating on a empty bucket with a stick. All while we danced and sang;
Trick or Treat
Money or Sweets
what you gat
give it to me!
The louder more energetic the performance the more candy you got. This must have been a sight, i wish i had pictures. Fun times 🙂
So yea i feel sorry for the younger generation because they will never get to experience that carefree fun life of being a kid the way it used to be.
Last week, just a few days before Halloween fire crackers were going off every few minutes in my neighborhood. Unfortunately not all were fire crackers, it turns out some were gun shots. One man was killed and two other wounded in a shooting incident right around the corner from me.
On the eve of Halloween the police were on the news giving out tips on how parents should keep their kids safe and warning that throwing anything at someone is assault.
Yea, I feel bad for this generation and My Country…
