Several years ago while having one of many debates with co-worker about what is wrong with this country, i came to the conclusion that at the root of every problem in The Bahamas is Corruption/Slackness.
Go ahead try it. Think about any social problem and you will find that Slackness and/or Corruption contributed to creating, or preventing the solution at least 90% of the time… seriously!
Noun: slackness slak-nuss
1. The quality of being lax and neglectful
Noun: Corruption ku’rup-shun
1. Lack of integrity or honesty(especially susceptible to bribery); use of position of trust for dishonest gain
Having come to this conclusion years ago, i decided to create the facebook group Bahamians Against Corruption and Slackness. The Goal is for Bahamians to come together and share their experiences and expose corruption wherever it is found.
The inspiration for this post came from the comment on this Tribune article. The Comment ask simply
Is There any Institution in this Country that’s without some sort of corruption??
The Emotion and frustration in that one question is something I’ve felt many times reading the many stories of what goes on in this country by The Government and its agencies.
The Article that inspired this comment was about a Lawyer who played a key role in the Arawak homes saga.
If your read Bahamas: where right is wrong and wrong is right you will see that i concluded that Arawak Homes is not at fault for the current situation.
The lawyers and land developers who did everything in their power to mislead the courts and obtain the land by fraudulent means were.
The Supreme Court Justice in the case was of the same opinion. In fact the justice decided that the Lawyers misconduct was so serious that he forwarded 3 copies of his decision to the relevant bodies for action to be taken against the lawyers.
a copy of this decision…..be forwarded by the Registrar to:
(i) The Bar Association for disciplinary action;
(ii) The Attorney General for contempt action and;
(iii)The Director of Public Prosecutions for investigation concerning
any breach of the Penal Code.
So why did this inspire the frustrated question?
One of the lawyers criticized by the Justice was appointed to the BENCH just 3 years later
That’s right. A lawyer accused of corruption and misconduct in trying to mislead the courts was then appointed to be a Magistrate who administers the law.
Magistrate Derrence Rolle!
I mean does it get more Corrupt and Slacker than that? Only in The Bahamas! Sometimes I don’t know whether to laugh of cry. This country is a mess! Why are we surprised by the current state of lawlessness in this country when S@#T like this is allowed to happen!
According to The Arawak Homes Report
“Arawak is not aware that any of the above institutions having acted on the findings of the Supreme Court or that any of these matters have been investigated.”
Why did neither The Bar Association, The Attorney General’s Office, nor The Director of Public Prosecutions act on the Supreme Court’s recommendations? And how could this man be allowed to become a magistrate?
Only could be Slackness or Corruption, maybe both.
