Prime Minister Hubert A. Ingraham announced at a press conference yesterday that he will be leading the FNM into the next general election.
While many of you are overjoyed at the news, I’m sure many you are equally dismayed.
The general feeling of public sentiment has been that people are tired of the same old same old in government. People want change, they want new faces with fresh ideas… or so it would appear.
Bahamians have traditionally been cautious when it comes to new leadership and prefer the known leader/party to the unknown. Preferring more experience over youthful energy and new ideas.
One of the reasons that the PM gave for remaining as leader is that the People want him to. Which is interesting considering that the FNM convention was canceled. Hmmmm…
Another reason given was that much that he wanted to accomplish was not accomplished due to economy and global conditions. Fair enough. But should his government be given a pass because of a global recession?
Are there other criteria that he can be evaluated on other than the economy… how about crime… oh wait, crime is a result of the poor economy too… hmm
This whole issue of who will lead the country brings up some interesting questions;
- Should we have Term Limits for our Prime Ministers like the Americans have for their Presidents?
- Should we change our electoral process/style of government so that we can vote for leaders separate of party… a republic?
- How can we develop new leaders if the old one refuse to make room… Interestingly, this is also the case in many Bahamian Corporations, where the young feel stifled by senior management refusing to give them a chance.
In addition, Ingraham was born in 1947 which means he will be 65 come 2012. Is the retirement age still 65 or is it now 70?
How ever you feel about Hubert Ingraham and Perry Christie, its looking more and more like one of them will be the Prime Minister of The Bahamas… again.
I guess thats what it boils down to; Is Hubert Ingraham and Perry Christie the best we have to offer right now? Are they the only ones capable of leading this country?
I not so sure…what y’all think?
