It is great to know that someone out there is listening; A post I made back on November 4th 2010 was used in the creation of Operation Rapid Strike.
LOL, Ok, Ok. I cannot claim any credit for the new tactic recently unveiled by Police Commissioner Greenslade. However, the article I wrote back in November entitled Quick Fix for Crime focused on an easy solution to reduce crime and bears a resemblance to “Operation Rapid Strike”.
The genesis of that article came out of my view that criminals were moving with impunity about the Island. Traveling freely with guns, knives and drugs to engage in nefarious activities with no fear of being captured. I surmised that if the police were to interrupt this free movement of criminals with road blocks they would;
- Apprehend a lot of these criminals before they had chance to engage in criminal activity
- Deter potential villains from moving about the island
- Engage with the criminals on the streets with police officers, who are equipped and trained to deal with them, rather than innocent civilians.
This is basically what Operation Rapid Strike does. It takes the fight to the criminals. Using profiles to target hotspot areas of New Providence which resulted in the arrest of 14 suspects on the first night.
Kudos to Police Commissioner Greenslade and the entire RBPF. Its great to see the police adjusting and using some new strategies to try to get a handle on crime. Its this kind of innovation that will lead to a reduction in crime.
I of course, have a few more ideas that I hope will be used as well 🙂
