If your week was anything like my own, you didn’t get to follow the news due to a crazy demanding week at work. Nevertheless I spent my Saturday night reading the 2 major papers and top online tabloid and I picked out what i believe are the most interesting stories of the past week. All to keep you informed!
Here we go; (btw click title to read story in local paper)
It seems that every Monday there is another shocking story of murder(s) in The Bahamas. What was most shocking about this one was the age of the persons involved. The victim was a 51-year-old man who was ran over by a 44-year-old. Most murders in The Bahamas are between the ages of 18 and 35 years old.
In further escalation of the protest against the sale of BTC to Cable and Wireless telecoms company opposition leader Perry Christie made this announcement to the press.
Sigh… another government run company with major quality service issues. PMH has had poor care for years. This new programme is much needed. I hope they are serious and it actually makes a difference.
This young man was charged with murder of Craig Rolle, Murder #12 on my 2011 Murder Count page. It seems the motive for this murder was the 5k worth of gold that Mr. Rolle was wearing. This shows how cash for gold has increased crime in The Bahamas.
This will likely be one of the biggest political stories of the month. Mr McCartney took his rebellion against papa to a whole nother level with this one. He is either showing immense courage and leadership or is committing political suicide. Only time will tell.
Ahh, my Bahama Land. This was like something out of the movies. Men force they way into a home at 4am and riddle sleeping man with bullets as he lay next to his girlfriend. This was a hit plain and simple. I found myself thinking, “at least they didn’t kill his girlfriend or other family members in the house.” From some accounts this guy was a bad boy, i’m not saying he deserved to be killed, but live by the gun die by the gun.
It’s interesting to note that his mother said he was not troublesome, just hung out with the wrong crowd… hmmm.
Nah thats a mortgage. $3 Billion! I found this interesting because I really didnt know about it. Also you might recall a few months back a group of investors offered to buy Atlantis.
Last week when I posted that Andre Birbal was found guilty I also mention that some people were concerned about the lack of evidence in the case. This story outline’s those concerns and seeks to explain the sentence. There are some good points and it seems he could have a case on appeal, especially to the privy council. But when you have lil boys posing in tool belts and hard hats, Foxhill Prison is where you need to be.
In another disturbing sexual molestation case, a man was found guilty of incest with his 14-year-old grand-daughter. He admitted to performing oral sex, fondling and taking nude photos of the girl. He admitted guilt and they have the pictures, but he only received 12 years, 23 less than Birbal. I don’t know bout that. he shouldve received at least 25 imo.
In recent years we’ve seen the attempts at witness tempering and intimidation increase tremendously. Which is a direct threat to law and order in society. So I applaud the government for addressing that problem with this unit. Now my only hope is that it works the way it is supposed to.
Thats a wrap!
If you know of any stories that you think should be on this list, post the link in the comments and i’ll add it. Help me out here I’m only human.
