So it’s that time of year again. When people all over The Bahamas try to cram shows of love and affection that should be everyday occurrences in to one big orgy of spending, grandstanding and otherwise false shows of affection.
If we’re honest with ourselves we’d admit that Valentines Day is one big lie… in fact no one is even sure how the holiday was originated. It’s just a day that has been used to grease the wheels of capitalism during a traditionally slow period after the Christmas holiday.
Ok, Before you assume I’m a bitter single dude who is just hating, let me say I’m probably in the best relationship of my adult life…. love you baby!
I just think its stupid the way people go all out on one arbitrary day set by god knows who. Of course it’s not all bad, it’s a beautiful thing to be in love and perhaps this day is one great chance to really show it. perhaps.
When I realize that valentine’s day was right around the corner I started thinking about what to write and what i would entitle the article. I could go with the normal feel good articles playing into the whole day for lovers vibe… but this site is called Straight Talk. So after thinking about it for a while, I came up with an article and title that i thought would capture your attention and make you want to read. Actually its 3 title rolled into one.
Valentines Day is for Losers
Valentine’s Day is a hard day for a lot of people, they’re single, lonely and longing to be in love, then along comes this day when everybody who is in a relationship gets to rub it in their faces. It’s not so bad for guys, but its pretty rough for the ladies.
They usually have to go into work amidst all kind of Red & White decorations and watch as every other female in the office receives sing-o-grams and huge baskets… everybody but them. It can be quite depressing, in fact they might be tempted to send themselves flowers, you know, just to blend in.
Well I’m sorry to say, If you buy an arrangement of flowers and sent it to yourself… You’re a Loser!
Single ladies keep your head up and don’t settle for a relationship JUST so you can say you’re in one.
Valentines Day is for Suckers!
There are a lot of people, male and female, getting suckered on this day and the sad part is many of them are doing it to themselves. They are blissfully ignorant or pretending to be. Here’s 4 ways people are suckered on Valentines Day;
- Your BF/Husband has been mistreating/neglecting/abusing/ cheating on [you get the idea] for a while now, but you know what, its V-Day, so all is well; you get flowers sent to work, maybe some jewelery or a basket, dinner and sex by candle light … you’re happy…for a day! Lol, Sucker.
- Your GF/Wife demands that you lavish her with gifts on V-Day every year, or all hell is going to breaks loose. You HAVE to send flowers to work, and they can’t be no jokey flowers either, cause she’s competing with her co-workers. You HAVE to take her out to dinner, sorry, an expensive dinner. She aint into no basket you BETTER visit John Bull and come out with something that shines and fits in a small package… you do it to keep her happy. How the saying goes, peace in the streets to get piece between the sheets? Something like that, but you is a Sucker!
- You been trying to get with this girl for a minute now and she finally giving you the time of day. Valentines Day coming up, you have to impress, so you send a big $500 basket to her work. Its one of several she receives that day and she feels so loved, all of her coworkers are jealous. She calls you several days later to thank you… Sucker!
- This dude been trying to get with you for a minute now, but you ain’t really feeling him like that. Vday comes around and you’re feeling lonely and vulnerable, so you tell him he can take you out. He sends you a huge basket and takes you to a super fancy restaurant. End of the night he drives to his place, you aint really into him like that, but you had a little too much to drink, the dinner was nice, the flowers was nice, and now you’re feeling a little obligated… you get JUICE… lol Sucker!
I’m sure y’all can come up with more scenarios and you may even know some friends that are suckers… share your stories in the comments.
Valentines Day is for Lovers!
This one is self explanatory isn’t it? Valentines day is special, yes, but not overly so. You may go out to dinner, you might buy flowers, give and receive gifts. But none of it is a requirement. Why? Because you already do those things throughout the year.
Your relationship is about more than just one day, it is not defined by the size of a gift basket or arrangement of flowers. Those things are nice but whats really important is that there is mutual respect, friendship and trust between both of you.
Valentines Day has been perverted by its commercialization. Its become more about material things and surface level affection instead of a celebration of deep love that it should be. I want to see it reclaimed by the real lovers.
Don’t let yourself get so caught up in a meaningless day that you don’t focus on what is really important, like true love. What does true love look like you ask;
Wouldn’t it be great to be old and still in love? Somehow I don’ t think they got there by showing love on just one day and focusing on material things. Food for thought!
