Every time a tourist dies on vacation in our country, it is a blow to our image. It is especially bad when that death is thought to be the result of some negligence by our country.
This year I’ve heard of more tourists deaths than I can recall from past years.
There was the drowning at Atlantis, Numerous Jet ski accidents with at least 2 deaths that I can recall. Most recently there was the power sailing death in Grand Bahamas where a newly wed woman plunged 400 feet to her death.
With so many accidents involving water sports in This country, we need to ensure that proper regulations are in place to regulate this industry and best practises are followed by industry operators.
According to Minister Deveaux and Port Controller, Commander Patrick McNeil,
Operators’ equipment is inspected every year they renew their licenses. He added that it is up to the operators to ensure that their equipment is in working order and is safe during the year. You can never stop checking. It’s like parachuting from an aircraft; every time you have to check your equipment to ensure that there isn’t something there that you didn’t pay attention to.
Do you think enough is being done to ensure visitor safety in The Bahamas?
