Change. We need to change the way our communities operate if we want to ensure that what happened to Marco Archer never happens again.
When you really sit down and think about it our society is set up in such a way that the pedophiles and rapist have it easy.
We are more likely to shame the victim rather than the perpetrators of certain crimes, so victims often times remain silent. Not only that, we encourage our children to beg money from adults/complete strangers in the form of sponsorship.
I came across a post on Facebook by Terrence A. Bethel that made me think and inspired this post. I want you to read and share it with your friends, relatives, church members etc.
I would like to share some changes that I feel are important to this community in which we live.
1. We must stop teaching our children to beg adults for money. Schools and churches should desist from asking children to sell tickets and collect sponsors door to door. Predators are often very generous to children.
2.When children ask us as an adult for money gently explain to them that they should not do this as this could be dangerous. Don’t even offer them gifts if their parents or another adult who supervises them is not present.
3. We can introduce a nosy neighbor programme in our streets. Every day you have one adult on the street responsible for being a nosy neighbor. They are to ask anyone they see why they are in the neighborhood and probe into as much personal business as they want. We can post signs like crime watch neighborhoods that say “this is a NOSY NEIGHBOR neighborhood.
4. We should once or twice a year in each neighborhood close down the street and have a block party so that each person knows who lives in the neighborhood. We can choose any of the public holidays to have this. Maybe the first of these can be our October holiday.
Please add to these comments or make suggestions but I would also like people to consider adopting any of these ideas.
Excellent Suggestions in my opinion. Especially the part about children begging.
What do you think? Good Ideas? Do you have anything to add to the list of things we need to put a stop to in our communities?
