Do you remember when ‘phone card vendoring’ was at its peak? There were some guys I swear would stay on the side of the road from morning, all day in the sun and up until 9 ‘o’ clock at night.
Every time I drove pass these guys on the streets I’d always think to myself, do they regret not paying attention in school. And I’d always wonder, do current students view selling phone cards as a legitimate job?
A phone card vendor? Oh sorry that job no longer exists. BTC killed it.
I was tuned in to Real Talk with Ortland Bodie recently when a young lady called saying she needed a job. She proceeds to tell Mr. Bodie how she had applied everywhere and nobody had called her back.
When Mr. Bodie asked her what she was qualified for, her answer was “Anything, I just need a job”. Mr. Bodie did not accept this answer and pressed her further. She finally said she could work in sales and then mentioned clothing stores, hair salons, or restaurants.
Now it was obvious to me from the minute she started talking that she didn’t have any qualification to speak of. But what really caught my attention was her sense of entitlement attitude. She seemed almost accusatory when she said “I sent my resume everywhere, and nobody called me yet.”
Doesn’t she realized that things are slow? Didn’t she think to herself, “all the jobs I’m qualified for are low quality jobs with a lot of competition?” Did it even occur to her to think, “maybe my resume was not impressive, maybe I didn’t put it together correctly?”
No. Instead she seemed to feel that all she had to do was send out her resume and she would automatically get a job. No Young lady you have to do some work for it especially in these tough economic times.
People in this country need a reality check .
Jobs are not just there waiting on you, you have to be qualified, you got to have the right attitude. +20,000 persons are said to be unemployed in The Bahamas. If you want a job you have to step your game up!
Do you think some people need a major reality check?
