A friend of mine posted a link to an article on facebook that revealed that The Bahamas is less corrupt than the United States. Which, to most Bahamians may come as a surprise.
After thinking about it for a while, My response was that we might be less corrupt, but the difference is that when you get caught out right in The US, you face serious consequences
- The media is relentless in pursuing you
- Colleagues as well as watch dog groups call for your head
- You are called before Congress
- Criminal Charges are brought against you
… no so here in the Bahamas.
In the US we’ve seen it with celebrities (Tiger Woods for example) and even presidential candidates. In fact, persons are held accountable not only for committing an offense themselves but for knowing about it and doing nothing.
For example A popular college basketball coach was forced to resign, not because of anything he did, but because of something that one of his assistance did and he failed to act on it! Can you imagine that happening in the Bahamas?
This kind of thing happens all the time in the US and other countries…
For example Jamaica minister of labour and his assistant were forced to resign because a road works project went 60 Million dollars over budget.
Not here, our projects regularly go over budget.
People who mess up whether it’s through no fault of their own are forced to resign or are fired. This happens all the time in the US and other countries…. Its called accountability!
There is no accountability in The Bahamas….
- Dredging in Our National Park
- The 1984 Commission of Inquiry
- Numerous Housing Irregularities
- The Road Improvement Project
- Educational Loan over subscribed
- The Road Traffic Liscensing Scandal
- The Immigration Scandal
- The Korean boat scandal
- The Sale of BTC
- The Road Traffic Accounting Scandal
- The Crime rate
This list can go on and on. There is no political party distinction because both display the same behavior when in power.
How many persons have been locked up, prosecuted, or have lost their jobs due to corruption or incompetence?
This country can not hope to improve and reach the next level in our national development until we develop a robust accountability system.
When we have (high-level) persons losing their jobs and/or going to jail over the routine corruption and incompetence in this country, then perhaps we can begin to see real change in this country.
As it is right now everybody in government or looking to get in government will continue to pillage (intentionally or not)
Only when they realize they can actually face real consequences will it stop.
Thats My 5 Cents!
Do You feel there is enough accountability in The Bahamas? Particularly in Government? What Can We to correct this?
