This may seem funny but I only buy Bahamian eggs.
On a recent shopping trip to Phill’s Food Services my girlfriend picked up some eggs while I was in another aisle. When returned I noticed eggs in the trolley that were not Bahamian. They were from North Carolina or somewhere in the US I immediately took them out of the trolley and back to the freezer.
There were no Bahamian eggs so we didn’t get eggs that day.
The eggs I have in my fridge now are called Bahamas Best from Bob Farm’s Fresh Eggs and cost only $1.50. There are other Bahamian egg producers you can support, just look for eggs with the Bahamian flag on it. I don’t know if I’m helping but that’s the stand I decided to make.
In fact, wherever possible I buy Bahamian products when I’m grocery shopping. You Should too.
The Minister of Agriculture recently stated
“As you know the Bahamas imports more than 90 per cent of what we eat. To the extent that we are able I am hoping can reduce that to 60 to 70 per cent.”
The agricultural industry in The Bahamas has a long history of failure due to a myriad of challenges. So I don’t know if this will be accomplished, but the first step to accomplishing anything is setting ambitious and inspiring goals.
This goal is one I support fully and I think you should support as well.
Why I try to Buy Bahamian Products
- Support the local Economy: Buying local keeps dollars in the country
- Saves Jobs: Unemployment is extremely high, buying local keeps Bahamians employed
- It’s Healthier: Bahamian products are usually minus steroids and hormones that you find in American products
In addition to buying eggs I also support the local farming industry by purchasing fresh vegetables from the local farmers markets here in Nassau. (There’s a farmers market on Gladstone Rd. and Another on Blake Rd.)
Like I said before, I don’t know if I don’t know if I’m actually helping, but all each of us can do is take a stand and do our part.
Most of us talk about change, but most of the time we’re talking about other people changing. The only people we can change is ourselves.
Your turn, Share your thoughts..
What other products can we buy that are Bahamian made?
