If you hear some Bahamians talk, the only way to stop crime is to start hanging.
I’ve long-held that hanging is not the answer. No not because I’m some bleeding heart liberal, but simply because it does not work and we have been so focused on it as a solution for the last 20 years that we have failed to seriously look at alternatives.
Don’t get me wrong, sometimes when I hear the senseless murder that take place I feel that these criminals should pay the ultimate price also.
But how long are we going to debate about handing, when we could be focused on more productive solutions?
But we need to hang! Ok, Ok I hear you. let me explain
Why Hanging won’t work for Us
1. Most developed countries think hanging is inhumane
And unfortunately or fortunately depending on where you stand, we do need to care what those countries think.
No, we are not Saudi Arabia. We’re not Singapore and we’re not Cuba or even the state of Texas for that matter.
We are a small little third world country that depends on international treatise and the good will of bigger, more resourceful nations to survive.
That’s reality… deal with it.
2. The Highest Court in The Bahamas
I’m talking about The Privy Council or in the words of Jerome Sawyer; that group of old white men that tell us what to do.
Perhaps you think we should do away with the privy council because they don’t understand our situation or culture.
I won’t argue the merits of that here. But even if we decide to do away with them it could take up to 10 years!
The murder rate increased almost 30% in 2011, are you prepared for things to remain relatively unchanged for the next 10 years?
I don’t think so.
So what if Hanging is not an option?
What if the government admits that we’re not hanging. period. What would we do to control the cancer that is crime in our society?
I believe we have to approach it from at least 3 angles;
1. Control, or at least make it damn difficult for criminals to operate
2. Reduce repeat offenders
3. Prevent more youth from turning to a life of crime.
Addressing these issues are extremely complicated, which is the reason most people simple focus on hanging (to our detriment).
So instead of pandering to the masses our government needs to step up with some innovative and well thought out strategies.
I have one or two ideas strategies we can use to address the 3 points above and will be discussing them with you in the coming months.
But I want you to think seriously about this;
