The American presidential debates have been awesome, haven’t they?
I’ve watched each one so far and I can’t tell you how impressed and envious I am at the same time.
Here you have the two men vying to be the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, squaring off against each other for 90 minutes, being grilled by an impartial moderator and judged instantly by millions of people. Awesome!
If you’re a Bahamian and you watched any one of the debates, including the vice-presidential debates, you can’t help but be more than a little bit envious. Because it is unheard of leaders in this country to debate each other. Simply unheard of.
In fact during the last general election, our former Prime Minister said in no uncertain terms, there will be no debates. He is now referred to as “Former Prime Minister”.
Why are there no debates in our electoral process? uh? Its crazy!
Must people seem to feel that debates will not work for us. One lady said to me recently, “You see how they does carryon in the House of Assembly? Debates ain’t ga be no different”
I disagree. But more importantly, It doesn’t matter. Here’s why;
- All sides agree to the debate format and rules prior to the debates
- There will be an impartial moderator
- Most people don’t watch the House of Assembly coverage, the majority will watch the debate
- If they do act like clowns, they will be judged as clowns…by the entire population
Whatever happens it will be a win for the electorate as anything is better than Rallies that take place now
Why we must have debates in 2017
Every Bahamian realizes that we’re facing some of the most challenging times in our history. We are facing some tough choices that will affect our country for the next hundred years. No that’s not a typo, that’s how I feel.
The decisions that are being made now will have a very long lasting impact on our country and thus the future of our children. Its important that we get them right. Its important that we have the right people in place to make those decisions.
Its no longer enough for politicians to depend on long standing family tradition of voting for a particular party. No politician should be accepted who’s whole campaign is based around supplying clean drinking water, electricity, Cable TV smooth roads or docks for local island communities.
Here I’ll give you a hint; those things should be standard amenities in a modern, 40 year old Bahamas with a GDP of over $8 Billion per year.
We need more from our wannabe leaders. We deserve more!
I believe that having debates will force candidates to have legitimate plans that can stand up to questioning. It will also educate the general population about whats going on with a particular issue as it will be debated from several angles.
Debates will not solve our problems but they will be a step in the right direction and It will lead to a more informed dialogue around issues facing this country.
Folks, we really need this, we really really need this.
I will not support any candidate/party that refuses to debate. I will make it my mission to agitate for debates prior to the 2017 general election.
Are you with me on this?
