Whenever I watch American politics I can’t help but compare it to our local politics here in The Bahamas.
So as it became clear that Obama had won re-election and the pundits turned their attention to why the republican party lost, I again drew a parallel to local political parties in The Bahamas.
According to many of the pundits the republican party lost because of their stance on issues such as women rights, immigration and social programs.
As one CNN pundit put it
this is the last election the republican party could afford to take those positions and still hope to win an election.
The key take away for me was that the republican party can not do what they’ve always done and expect to win.
I believe that political parties in The Bahamas can no longer operate the way they used to and hope that their base of die-hard supporters will bring them the victory.
The voting public has changed. The number of people willing to blindly follow political parties is declining. While those expecting good governance and real leadership are growing.
Bahamian Political Parties should take note….
